Abstract

Zusammenfassung Das wichtigste Arbeitsgebiet Hirzebruchs in den siebziger Jahren war die Theorie der Hilbertschen Modulflächen und verwandte Fragestellungen. In seinen Gesammelten Abhandlungen sind etwa fünfzehn Arbeiten der Jahre 1970 bis 1980 diesem Thema gewidmet. Dazu gehört vor allem die hundertseitige Arbeit Hilbert modular surfaces (Nr. 51 der Ges. Abh.). Diese Arbeiten zeigen Hirzebruchs Vorliebe für konkrete Beispiele und explizite Rechnungen. Er kehrte mit diesem Thema zu seinen Anfängen zurück: Schon in seiner Dissertation hatte er sich mit komplex zweidimensionalen Mannigfaltigkeiten beschäftigt.
