Abstract

Zusammenfassung Ungefähr mit Beginn der siebziger Jahre änderte sich Hirzebruchs wissenschaftliches Leben in vieler Hinsicht. Das wichtigste Ereignis war die Gründung des Sonderforschungsbereichs 40 Theoretische Mathematik (s. Kap. 21). Während in den sechziger Jahren auswärtige Mathematiker nur einzeln und für kurze Zeit eingeladen werden konnten, waren jetzt ständig Gäste anwesend. Dadurch wurde die Atmosphäre viel internationaler. Auch entstanden Arbeitsgruppen, die eng zusammenarbeiteten. Für Hirzebruch bedeutete diese sehr erwünschte Entwicklung aber auch eine enorme Zunahme der Verwaltungsarbeit. Man kann kaum ermessen, wie viele Briefe er für den SFB schrieb, wie viele Telefongespräche er führte, wie oft er mit Gästen zum Essen ging und um wie viele ganz triviale Angelegenheiten (Wohnung, Hotel, Reisekosten . . . ) er sich kümmern musste. Er musste Sitzungen leiten und war verantwortlich für die Berichte und die Verlängerungsanträge des SFB.
