Abstract

Zusammenfassung Die Gründung des Max-Planck-Instituts für Mathematik (MPI) im Jahr 1980 war ein Höhepunkt in Hirzebruchs lebenslangem Bestreben, aus Bonn ein international führendes Zentrum in der Mathematik zu machen. Die Vorgeschichte reicht bis in die fünfziger Jahre zurück. Wir berichten in diesem Kapitel über die ersten gescheiterten Versuche zur Gründung eines Max-Planck-Instituts und in späteren über die erfolgreiche Gründung des Sonderforschungsbereichs und dann auch des Max-Planck-Instituts. Die gesamte Vorgeschichte ist kompliziert und verworren. Es wird jedoch deutlich, dass Hirzebruch seit seiner Berufung nach Bonn eine führende Rolle in der Gemeinschaft der Mathematiker in Deutschland spielte. Er begann der allgemein anerkannte und unumstrittene Sprecher der Community zu werden.
