Abstract

Zusammenfassung Sir Michael Francis Atiyah (Abb. 13.1) ist der Mathematiker, mit dem Hirzebruch am längsten zusammengearbeitet hat. Aus der gemeinsamen mathematischen Arbeit, die am intensivsten in den Jahren 1955–1962 war, erwuchs eine lebenslange persönliche Freundschaft (Abb. 13.2). Beide haben sich bei verschiedenen Gelegenheiten dazu geäußert. Wir beginnen mit den Worten, mit denen Atiyah seinen Rückblick auf die gemeinsame Zeit einleitet und zusammenfasst: Fritz Hirzebruch played a major part in my life, particularly over the early formative period. He became a close personal friend, a long-term collaborator and, through the Arbeitstagung, my introduction to the mathematical world. I learned a good deal from him on how to write papers, how to present talks, and, most importantly, how to handle people. In short he was an ideal role model.
