Abstract

Zusammenfassung Anfang Oktober 1945 fuhr ein junger Mann mit der Eisenbahn von Hamm nach Münster. Trotz der kurzen Entfernung war es eine lange Fahrt, denn viele Gleise und Stellwerke waren nach dem Krieg erst notdürftig repariert worden, und auf halber Strecke, in Drensteinfurt, musste die Lokomotive gewechselt werden. Der junge Mann war nicht ganz 18 Jahre alt, und doch hatte er schon manches erlebt: Dienst als Luftwaffenhelfer, Arbeitseinsatz, um Gefechtsstellungen auszubauen, Dienst als Soldat, Gefangenschaft. Seine Heimatstadt Hamm war weitgehend zerstört einschließlich des Hauses, das seine Familie bewohnt hatte, und der Schule, die er besucht hatte. Und fast noch schlimmer sah es in Münster aus, die gesamte Innenstadt war nur noch ein einziger Trümmerhaufen, und von der Universität, an der bereits sein Vater studiert hatte, war fast nichts mehr übrig geblieben.
