Abstract

From the early 1860s up to the end of his teaching career at the Berlin University Weierstraß was concerned with building the theory of analytic functions on rigorous, arithmetic foundations. For some twenty years he provided his lectures on the introduction to this theory with continuous refinements and improvements, without ever deciding to publish it. Occasionally he presented his main results in communications to the Berlin Akademie, and in published papers. The present paper offers an account of Weierstraß’s approach to function theory at various stages of his teaching based both on lecture notes from his courses taken by his students at various periods of time, and on relevant published papers as well.
