Abstract

Zusammenfassung Über den Maler Giotto (1267–1336), dessen Hauptwerk, die Fresken in der Arena-Kapelle in Padua 1305/06 entstanden, schreibt H. Weigert [Weltkunstgeschichte, ed. W. Braunfels, Bd. 2, S. 182]: „Der leibhafte Mensch, nicht mehr die gottsuchende Seele, ist das neue Thema. Der wirkliche Mensch aber, der körperliche, braucht, um existieren zu können, einen Raum um sich. Die mittelalterlichen Gestalten leben ideell im Gottesreich, das durch den Goldgrund der Mosaiken und Altäre illusioniert wurde. Anstelle dieses Goldgrundes hatte zuerst Giotto blauen Himmel gegeben. Zugleich schuf er um seine vollrund gewordenen Gestalten durch Architekturen oder Felsen eine Bühne, auf der sie agieren konnten. Er machte das früher flächige Bild räumlich. Seine Nachfolger fügten dieser Bühne weitere raumschaffende Elemente bei, bis der gewonnene Raum organisiert und systematisch aufgebaut werden mußte. Das geschah durch die Zentralperspektive, um die die Renaissance gerungen hat, bis sie von dem gelehrten Baumeister Brunelleschi bald nach 1400 logisch konstruiert wurde.“
