Abstract

Zusammenfassung André Weil. hat in seinem Buch „Foundations of algebraic Geometry“ die algebraische Geometrie auf eine neue Basis gestellt und dabei auch die alte Terminologie durch eine radikal neue ersetzt. Im Zentrum stehen bei ihm — mit Recht — die absolut irreduziblen Mannigfaltigkeiten, die er kurzerhand Varieties nennt. Er unterscheidet scharf zwischen einer Vereinigungsmenge solcher Varieties (bunch of varieties) und einer formalen Summe von Varieties derselben Dimension (cycle). Die Unterscheidung dieser beiden ganz verschiedenen Begriffe, die bisher durch dasselbe Wort Mannigfaltigkeit (= variety) gedeckt wurden, scheint mir unbedingt geboten; die Wahl der Worte kommt mir aber nicht glücklich vor. Ich möchte daher den folgenden Vorschlag machen, der durch Gespräche und Vorträge in Paris und Lüttich schon vorbereitet wurde.
