Abstract

In surgery computer aided techniques supported by high performance computers and medical software using methods of CAS (computer aided surgery) will become most important. In the first part of this paper we present a method for better preparation of craniofacial surgeons based on 3D computer simulations as well as techniques for increasing the stability and lifetime of dental implants. This work is done in the joint project “Geometrische Datenverarbeitung und Simulation bei der Planung und Durchführung zahnmedizinischer Eingriffe” together with FRIATEC AG, Mannheim-Friedrichsfeld, (Dr. Vizethum) and the „Klinik für Mund-, Kiefer- und Gesichtschirurgie“ (Prof. Mühling and Dr. Haßfeld). In the second part we introduce two methods for the visualization of computer tomograms. This is a part of the project “Computergestützte Operationsplanung und -kontrolle” supported by the “Forschungsschwerpunktprogramm Baden-Württemberg”. These visualization techniques are the basis for future work in this project, e.g. the vi-sualization of surgery tools and their simulated usage in surgery planning as well as virtual endoscopy. During our work we found out that volume ray casting is the better choice for visualization of biological structures, and surface rendering should be preferred for surgery tools and for implants. Hence in the near future we want to put together both methods into one hybrid algorithm.
