Abstract

In 1948 Shannon ran up against the problem of defining the informational content of a message. He discussed it with von Neumann who suggested: “You should call it entropy, for two reasons. In the first place, because your uncertainty function was used with that name in statistical mechanics, and therefore it already has a name. In the second place, which is perhaps the more important, no one actually knows what entropy may be, so in any discussion you’ll already be a step ahead.”
