Abstract

Well, I think people of my generation who have been mathematicians have been really fortunate. In all probability we have been living through the golden age of mathematics. Our century started with undeveloped ideas which needed to be corrected and made precise and with new discoveries in physics which needed to be described. If you look at the really famous old problems, the percentage of those that actually have been solved is quite high. Some of them as you know go back to Kepler, and some go back to Fermat. In this way we have been fortunate that all these openings existed. It is going to be different in the future because these basic questions don’t exist anymore. That is why I think that we have been living in the golden age of mathematics.
