Abstract

A year and a half ago, Professor Achim Bachem was appointed to the executive board of the German Aerospace Center (DLR). Prior to his appointment, he was Professor of Discrete Mathematics at the University of Cologne and the head of the Center for Parallel Computing (ZPR). Today, he is responsible for the technical and scientific management of seven DLR research institutes. Instead of mathematical issues, topics from the field of engineering occupy his time. Rather than focusing on his own research he now guides the work of other scientists. We asked the manager Achim Bachem about his view of mathematics.
