Abstract

Zusammenfassung In Froland wurde Abel von seiner Verlobten und der Familie Smith herzlich empfangen, sogar die Hauskatze erkannte ihn wieder. Tagsüber tollte Kandidat Abel mit den Kindern im Schnee, plauderte mit den Arbeitern des Werkes und scherzte mit den Damen des Hauses. Am Abend saß er gerne am Kartentisch, hin und wieder zog er sich zurück, um zu arbeiten. Nach Froland zu kommen, muss für ihn, verglichen mit dem Leben, das er diesen Herbst in Christiania geführt hatte, wie ein nie endendes Fest gewesen sein, er muss dort das Gefühl bekommen haben, dass es mit ihm aufwärts ging und vielleicht wagte er einmal daran zu glauben, dass sich endlich alles zum Guten wenden werde.
