Abstract

Zusammenfassung „Endlich bin ich im Focus all meiner mathematischen Wünsche angelangt, in Paris. Ich bin schon seit dem 10. Juli hier.“ So schrieb Abel am 12. August in seinem ersten Brief aus Paris an Professor Hansteen. Abel befürchtete, Hansteen könnte es für eine Dummheit von ihm halten, den langen Umweg über Triest, Venedig und die Schweiz gemacht zu haben, und er schrieb weiter: „Es tut mir außerordentlich leid, etwas getan zu haben, was nicht Ihren Beifall findet, doch da es nun mal geschehen ist, muss ich meine Zuflucht zu Ihrer Güte nehmen.“ Zu seiner Entschuldigung hatte Abel nichts anderes vorzubringen als seine Lust, sich in der Welt etwas umzusehen. „Und reist man denn bloß, um das streng Wissenschaftliche zu studieren? Nach dieser Tour arbeite ich umso eifriger.“
