Abstract

Zusammenfassung Niels Henrik sollte also nach Kopenhagen reisen und es war in erster Linie Hansteen, der ihm bei den nötigen Vorbereitungen half. An einem Sonntag Nachmittag spazierten sie zusammen nach Tøyen hinauf, um Hansteens Vetter, den Minister Treschow, zu besuchen. Hansteen wird es für nützlich gehalten haben, eine Empfehlung Treschows an Kollegen und Bekannte in Kopenhagen mitzunehmen. Obwohl der Philosoph Treschow eigentlich wenig Ahnung hatte von dem, was Abel da betrieb. Mathematik war ein Fach, das nicht im selben Maße wie Philosophie und Politik zur Allgemeinbildung beitrug. Abels Wissenschaft gehörte nicht zu der Art von Gelehrsamkeit und Kultur, die ein Student nach Treschows Auffassung durch Fleiß und Entsagung erlangen sollte. Die 100 Speziestaler, die Abel von Rasmussen erhalten hatte, wurden offenbar für ausreichend erachtet, jedenfalls trug Treschow nicht mit einem weiteren Zuschuss bei. Hansteen nahm aber Abel, vermutlich auf Anregung seiner Frau, mit zu einem Schneider und ließ ihm zwei neue Anzüge anfertigen.
