Abstract

Zusammenfassung Die zweiwöchigen Sommerferien hatten die Brüder zu Hause in Gjerstad verbracht. Am 13. August waren sie wieder in Christiania in der Schule. Nur wenige Tage später kam die Nachricht, Elisabeth Abel, ihre geliebte Großmutter, sei gestorben. Aus Gjerstad meldete auch Pastor Abel am 20. August 1817, dem Tag vor dem Begräbnis seiner Mutter, seinem Propst: „Die Zeiten spielen nun völlig verrückt und die Elemente scheinen sich allesamt zu verbünden, um uns kopfüber ins Elend zu stürzen. Nun kann ich mit Bestimmtheit sagen, dass die Armut mein Schicksal wird.“
