Abstract

Zusammenfassung In den umliegenden Gemeinden erzählte man sich, die Söhne von Pastor Abel aus Gjerstad hätten des Sonntags zusammen mit Gleichgesinnten vor der Kirche Karten gespielt, während drinnen ihr Vater den Gottesdienst hielt. Und wäre jener 11. März 1814 nicht so ein besonders kalter Wintertag gewesen, hätten die Jungen vielleicht auch dagesessen und Karten gespielt, während in der Kirche von Gjerstad ein nationaler Gebetstag abgehalten wurde. Aber vielleicht hatten die Knaben andere Gründe, um an diesem Tag in der Kirche zu sein? Wie dem auch sei, die Pfarrerssöhne hatten genug über das erfahren, was geschehen sollte, um neugierig zu sein. Vielleicht begleiteten sie den Vater zur Kirchentür und sahen zu, wie alle mit ernster und besorgter Miene eintraten. Vielleicht hörten auch sie von drinnen die Worte ihres Vaters, mit denen er zu Gott flehte: „Sieh gnädig herab auf unser geliebtes Vaterland und lasse Einigkeit, Kraft und Bürgersinn ein immer festeres Band knüpfen, um seine Unabhängigkeit, Freiheit und Ehre zu bewahren.“
