Abstract

Zusammenfassung Lie hatte schon als Professor in Christiania mit kontinuierlichen Gruppen gearbeitet, was von fundamentaler Bedeutung für die Formulierung der Grundlagen der Naturgesetze werden sollte. Im übrigen Europa wurden seine Arbeiten mit Interesse aufgenommen, wenn auch in wei taus geringerem Maße, als er es sich gewünscht hatte. 1m Laufe der 1870er Jahre stand er in regelmäßigem Kontakt zu Klein und Mayer in Deutschland, und in gewissem Maße auch zu den franzosischen Mathematikern. Eine große Veränderung in seinem Verhältnis zu den Franzosen stellte sich 1882 ein, als Lie in Paris seinen Vortrag hielt und vor allem Picard erkannte, worauf man Lies theoretische Ausfiihrungen anwenden konnte.
