Abstract

Zusammenfassung In den Beschreibungen seiner Zeitgenossen wird immer wieder auf Sophus Lies Korpergröße hingewiesen. Er wird als Riese beschrieben, mit üppigem Bart und graublauen Augen, die hinter den Brillenglasern funkelten. Im europäischen Ausland galt er als germanischer Gigant, als Urkraft, ein Riese voller Mut, mit tollkühnen Zielen und einem unbändigen Willen. Aus diesen Schilderungen physischer und geistiger Stärke entsprang das Bild eines genialen Wissenschaftlers, eines Sehers, der intuitiv neue Zusammenhänge erfasste, aber auch das Bild eines Kolosses, der in seinem eifrigen Streb en nach immer neuer Erkenntnis andere manchmal zur Seite drängte und sie aus mangelnder Vorsicht niedertrampelte. Man beschrieb ihn als engagierten und sehr aktiven Mann, der mit seiner ungewohnlichen körperlichen Kraft und Ausdauer die meisten Hindernisse überwand, aber auch später mit entsprechend heftigen Stimmungsschwankungen dafur zahlen musste.
