Direct Numerical Simulation of Boundary Layer Separation along a Curved Wall with Oscillating Oncoming Flow

Abstract

A direct numerical simulation has been performed in which the small scale fluctuations generated by a laminar separation bubble interact with a second separation bubble further downstream. Because of the oscillating oncoming flow, the size of the upstream separation bubble periodically varies, while the downstream bubble disappears when the inflow acceleration is close to its maximum. The fluctuations produced in the upstream bubble are damped by accelerating flow as they are convected downstream. The surviving disturbances are not strong enough to completely inhibit a second separation of the boundary layer downstream.
