Abstract

Zusammenfassung Disquisitiones Arithmeticae erschienen im Sommer 1801, also drei Jahre, nachdem Gauß nach Braunschweig zurückgekehrt war, in Leipzig, dem damaligen Zentrum des deutschen Buchhandels. Die folgende Zusammenfassung der Disq. Arithm. beschränkt sich auf den Inhalt des Buchs, und es wird nicht versucht, seinen Einfluß in der Geschichte der Zahlentheorie zu beschreiben. Disq. Arithm. zerfällt in sieben Kapitel, die hier im Einklang mit dem lateinischen Original als Sektionen bezeichnet werden. Die drei ersten Sektionen sind einführender Natur, die Sektionen IV–VI sind der Kern des Werks, und Sektion VII ist eine kurze Monographie, die von einem verwandten, aber eigenständigen Thema handelt. Das Buch ist dem Herzog von Braunschweig gewidmet, ohne dessen Hilfe es nie erschienen wäre oder hätte erscheinen können. Ein kurzes Vorwort stellt klar, daß Disq. Arithm. in der Tradition der Werke Diophants, Fermats, Eulers, Lagranges und Legendres steht.1
