Abstract

Zusammenfassung Der folgende Exkurs hat die Aufgabe, unser Unwissen über Details aus Gauß’ Kindheit und Jugend durch ausgewählte generelle Kommentare zur historischen und sozialen Situation wettzumachen. Braunschweig war norddeutsche und protestantische Residenzstadt. Die Kirche war einflußreich, aber Gauß’ Eltern scheinen nicht fromm und schon gar nicht pietistisch gewesen sein. Der Pietismus war damals sehr populär, vor allem auch im Kleinbürgertum [1]. Das große Interesse, das plötzlich um 1840 sich an Diskussionen über Tischrücken und ähnliche mystische Experimente entzündete, mag Gauß an die religiösen Bewegungen in seiner Jugend erinnert haben. Gauß’ Kommentar war eindeutig und sehr negativ, als ihn sein früherer Schüler Gerling, damals Professor der Physik in Marburg, um seine Stellungnahme bat. Gauß wies solche Erfahrungen grundsätzlich von sich und erklärte Gerling, daß Erlebnisse dieser Art keine wissenschaftliche Basis hätten.
