Abstract

Zusammenfassung 1809 erschien bei Perthes in Hamburg Gauß’ Theoria rnotus corporum coelestium in sectionibus conicis Solem ambientium. Dieses Buch ist fast 300 Seiten lang im Format der gesammelten Werke und enthält eine Übersicht über Gauß’ Werk a.uf dem Gebiet der theoretischen Astronomie, ohne jedoch stets die auch von ihm im konkreten Einzelfall benutzten Methoden zu beschreiben. Th. mot. erschien auf Lateinisch auf ausdrücklichen Wunsch von Perthes, der glaubte, ein lateinisches Buch habe bessere Verkaufsaussichten; da das ursprüngliche Manuskript in Deutsch abgefaßt worden war, war Gauß gezwungen, sein Buch zu übersetzen, was ihn viel Zeit und Mühe kostete.1 Das Thema der Th. mot. ist die Bestimmung der elliptischen bzw. hyperbolischen Bahnen von Planeten und Kometen aus einem Minimum von Beobachtungsdaten und unter Vermeidung überflüssiger oder willkürlicher Hypothesen. Im Vorwort erwähnt Gauß das Beispiel der Ceres Ferdinandea, deren Entdeckung den ersten Anstoß gegeben hatte, die in der Th. mot. dargelegten Methoden zu entwickeln.
