Abstract

Zusammenfassung Carl Friedrich und Johanna Gauß lebten in Göttingen in beengten und unsicheren Umständen, aber es scheint, daß Johanna gern in ihrer Heimatstadt, wo sie so viele Freunde und Bekannte hatte, wohnte. Johanna war nicht müßig; sie stand dem Haushalt vor, um den sich ihr Mann nicht gekümmert zu haben scheint. Das Bild, das wir heute sehen, ist das eines jungen Paares in der Manier des Biedermeier, ganz auf die Trennung zwischen privatem Glück und der Außenwelt bedacht. Der älteste Sohn Joseph kam in Braunschweig zur Welt und empfing seinen Namen Piazzi zu Ehren, dem Entdecker der Ceres, der Gauß so viel verdankte. Auch die anderen Kinder aus der ersten Ehe verdankten ihre Namen den Gestirnen — Minna, oder Wilhelmine, war nach Olbers, dem Entdecker der Pallas, und Louis nach Harding, dem Entdecker der Juno, benannt. Zwei Passagen aus dem Briefwechsel zwischen den Eheleuten geben uns einen Einblick in das Alltagsleben des Paars. Die Briefe stammen aus dem Jahr 1807 und wurden anläßlich Gauß’ Reise nach Bremen geschrieben.
