Abstract

Zusammenfassung Noch bevor Gauß im Herbst 1806 in Göttingen eintraf, bestätigten politische Entwicklungen die Richtigkeit seiner Entscheidung. Schon bald nach dem Ausbruch der Französischen Revolution befanden sich das Heilige Römische Reich und Frankreich im Kriegszustand. Seit 1799 regierte in Frankreich Napoleon, der die deutschen Staaten zwischen 1805 und 1807 entscheidend besiegte. In preußischem Auftrag reiste Herzog Ferdinand von Braunschweig 1806 nach St. Petersburg, um die Möglichkeit einer preußisch-russischen Koalition gegen Frankreich zu sondieren. Eine solche Koalition kam nicht zu Stande, und Preußen beschloß, allein den französischen Vormarsch in Mitteleuropa aufzuhalten.
