Measuring Physicians Workarounds: Implications on Work Processes and Patient

Abstract

In Hospitals, users can experiences a block in their workflow due to organization limitation to provide sufficient equipment. That often drives the creation of an alternative work process or ‘workaround’ rather than complete the work process as intended. The purpose of this study is (1) to measure user’s workarounds and compare them to the original work process by using Business Process Modeling Notation (BPMN). (2) To identify users motivation to create and perform workarounds. (3) To measures on how workarounds may affect costs in the organizations and reduce patient safety. Results have shown personal value and habit in some cases caused WA creation and WA impact is significant in time consuming as well as patient confidentiality and errors in performing the task required.
