Anisotropic Elasticity in Sheared Packings of Frictional Disks

Abstract

We study the effect of unilaterality of the interparticle interactions on the elastic response of granular materials. The anisotropy of the contact network is related to the opening of contacts during quasi-static shear deformations. As a result, local incremental constitutive relations describing the evolution of stress in terms of shear and volumetric strains are proposed, and it is shown that the macroscopic elastic behavior of anisotropic granular assemblies under biaxial deformations can be described by three independent elastic moduli: bulk, shear, and anisotropy modulus. We show that the bulk and shear moduli are independent of the imposed shear deformation if scaled by the contact density, and the magnitude of the anisotropy modulus is proportional to the ratio between shear and volumetric strain. The theoretical predictions are qualitatively in agreement with MD simulation results far from the jamming transition.
