Abstract

Zusammenfassung Platon, vom Ruhm Sokrates‘ angezogen, gründete nach dessen Tod eine eigene Akademie mit dem Ziel, durch eine philosophisch fundierte Bildung die künftige Elite auf eine bessere politische Praxis vorzubereiten. Diese Ausbildung sollte auch die Kenntnis der Mathematik umfassen, die in seinen Schriften (u. a. im Menon-Dialog) und in seiner Ideenlehre eine besondere Bedeutung hatte. Platons (alte) Akademie existierte mit Unterbrechungen bis zur Zerstörung Athens durch den römischen Feldherren Sulla 86 v. Chr. Einige Autoren, wie Diogenes Laertius, nennen die Phase von 266-86 v. Chr. die mittlere Akademie. Die neue Akademie wurde um 410 n. Chr. durch Plutarch von Athen neu gegründet und 529 endgültig geschlossen.
