Abstract

Zusammenfassung Thales aus Milet ist der älteste, namentlich bekannte griechische Mathematiker. In seinem Leben gibt es ein datierbares Datum, da er die totale Sonnenfinsternis vom 585 v. Chr. vorhergesagt haben soll. Das benötigte Mathematikwissen soll er in Ägypten gelernt haben. Auch die Zuordnung zu dem nach ihm benannten Satz ist ungesichert; Diogenes Laertius schreibt lapidar: Er hat zuerst das rechtwinklige Dreieck dem Kreis einbeschrieben. Alle Nachrichten über ihn stammen aus späterer Zeit und sind überlagert durch vielfältige Überlieferungsstränge. Dies hat zur Folge, dass einige Mathematikhistoriker Thales jegliche wissenschaftliche Bedeutung absprechen.
