Abstract

Zusammenfassung Mit Theon von Alexandria ist die Phase der hellenistischen Mathematik in Alexandria beendet. Seine Bearbeitung der Elemente Euklids ist insofern bedeutsam, da alle Euklid-Ausgaben bis 1800 auf seiner redaktionellen Arbeit beruhen. Seine Tochter Hypatia ist die einzige namentlich bekannte Mathematikerin des griechischen Altertums. Sie vertrat, wie ihr Vater, die altplatonische Philosophie und wurde 415 von einem christlichen Pöbel ermordert; von ihren Werken ist keines überliefert worden.
