Abstract

Zusammenfassung Pappos, der vorletzte der namentlich bekannten Mathematiker Alexandrias, lebt in einer Zeit des totalen Zusammenbruchs der altplatonischen Lehre um 300 n. Chr. Dank seines enzyklopädischen Wissens und seiner umfassenden Literaturkenntnis ist in seinem Werk eine Fülle von mathematischen Wissen bewahrt worden, die sonst in Vergessenheit geraten wäre. Diese Vielzahl von Einzelthemen hat man früher als Sammelsurium angesehen und ihn selbst als zweitrangigen Mathematiker eingestuft, da er in seiner Collectio nicht die systematische Strenge eines Euklid zeigte.
