Abstract

Zusammenfassung Obwohl es ältere mathematische Quellen wie die altbabylonischen Keilschrifttafeln und die Hindu-Schriften Sulbasutras (= Seil-Regeln) gibt, kann man davon ausgehen, dass die Mathematik, die sich ab dem 6. Jahrhundert v. Chr. in Griechenland und seinen Kolonien entwickelte, eigenständig dem griechischen Geist entsprungen ist. Der systematische Aufbau von geometrischen Lehrsätzen und die Einführung von Axiomen bei den Griechen ist einzigartig: Weder die Babyloniern auf ihren Tontafeln, noch die Inder in ihren frühen Schriften beweisen ihr Vorgehen. Die Griechen selbst suchen den Ursprung der Mathematik in Ägypten. Eine neuere Tendenz der Mathematikhistorie ist die Hervorhebnung von nichtgriechischen Quellen, wie Babylon, China, Indien und der (den griechischen Einfluß überwindende) Islam.
