Findings and Synthesis of Themes

Abstract

This chapter discusses the main findings of the study and seeks to synthesize the various themes brought together by the study. The study explains how flight-time, as an independent variable, could be a causal factor to total or partial mediators such as the market size of a city, attraction and spatial interaction between two locations, and the other dimensions of distance, which could in turn affect the dependent variable: organization design. Figure 10.1 shows a mediational model. Instead of hypothesizing a direct causal relationship between an independent variable and a dependent variable, a mediational model hypothesizes that the independent variable causes the mediator variable, which in turn causes the dependent variable. The mediator variable thus serves to clarify the nature of the relationship between independent and dependent variables (MacKinnon 2008).
