Abstract

Limited means can boost the development of new ideas and of finding new ways of presenting old ones. The example of popularisation of (not only) mathematics in Croatia is a corroboration of the previous statement. In Croatia there is a long tradition of mathematical journals publishing popular articles more or less regularly, tens of mathematical books for a general audience have been published in recent decades and the schools programme on national television has mathematical broadcasts. Still, a real change from the communication of mathematical topics to the popularisation of mathematics happened in the last 15 years. In that time the author and several other enthusiasts developed a mainly interactive and live communication-oriented approach to the popularisation of mathematics. As the financial means for the organisation and presentation of mathematical and other popular science workshops were and are quite scarce, most activities depend on the enthusiasm and original ideas of individuals and on finding presentation ideas that need only cheap materials. In this paper the author presents some of her experiences in the popularisation of mathematics in Croatia and ideas for workshops that can be organised with a very low budget.
