Abstract

On 22 November 1923, the dean’s office of the Philosophical Faculty, Section II of Ludwig-Maximilian University, Munich presented a list of candidates for the post of a full professorship for mathematics that had just become vacant. Carathéodory, “from the mathematical seminar of Berlin University”, was proposed as the first candidate on the list, followed by Paul Koebe, professor at Jena University. The professorship had become vacant on the retirement of Ferdinand Lindemann. Lindemann, originally from Hannover, who had been the supervisor of Hilbert’s thesis in Konigsberg and full professor in Munich since 1893, had become famous when, with his 1882 work Über die Zahl π (On the Number π) published in the Mathematische Annalen, he succeeded in proving that π is transcendental, after Hermite had established the same, some years earlier, for the number e.
