Abstract

Process industries cover a wide range of businesses, typically from the chemical, pharmaceutical or life science, oil, gas, steel, paper, and glass industries, but also from the consumer goods sectors like cosmetics and food. The production processes used in process industries differ significantly from those used in discrete manufacturing. Process manufacturing is characterized by continuous or discontinuous (batch) production processes. This results in the production of quantities or volumes rather than units.
