Abstract

Mathematical modelling of technical systems and processes holds a well—established position in all engineering disciplines—not least driven by powerful digital computers that allow for simulation, analysis and design. This is stimulated by new developments in the domain of modelling languages and computer tools that possess modern object-oriented concepts and algebraic/symbolic calculating capacities. With two current investigation projects on energy conversion—in the domains of power plant engineering and combustion engines—the object-oriented modelling and its potential in comparison with conventional approaches will be presented from the engineering perspective, especially from that of automatic control.
