Abstract

Summary Very large information systems are built, maintained and operated by people and organizations. The quality of these systems is to a great extent defined by two factors: The skills and motivation of these people and the culture in which these people work and build their careers. The culture for a successful managed evolution is based on long-term thinking, sustainability and trust. Very large information systems need thousands of people – very often located in different countries – for their development. The management of such a large, distributed workforce requires a deep understanding of the principles of managed evolution, a strong, clearly communicated commitment to managed evolution and also the support of the business. People must be supported by an adequate organization, specifically designed for managed evolution.
