An Adaptive Systems Model

Abstract

This chapter describes an Adaptive Systems Model (ASM) to represent the key internal elements required by a system to achieve long term viability in a complex and uncertain environment. The model directs attention to the functioning and information processes related to how a system acts to sense its environment, respond in the short term and also adapt in the long term. In addition to a focus on the functioning of individual components ASM provides an overarching perspective of how the internal elements of an entity are integrated into a single whole system. This holistic perspective enables judgements about the overall level of optimisation of the system. ASM consists of seven elements three of which (essential functions, regulation and coordination) have an operational focus. Two elements (strategy and purpose) have an external focus. The natural tendencies element represent the entities disposition, personality or culture. The final element (knowledge learning and adaptation) integrate and all other elements and represent the brain of the entity. Using the model in a recursive way to represent multiple layers of organisational system is discussed.
