Abstract

Mon intérêt pour cette histoire est venu du cÛté de Gaston Julia. Si aucune biographie ne lui a été consacrée, il y a beaucoup à lire sur sa vie. Une image de son enfance et de sa scolarité brillante puis de sa deuxième naissance (selon ses propres termes) après ses blessures de 1915, image polie par lui-même, est donnée par les nombreux discours qu'il a prononcés ou qui lui ont été adressés au cours de nombreuses cérémonies tout au long du xxe siècle (voir [Julia 1970]). Ce qu'il dit, ce qu'il ne dit pas, l'endroit où il le dit, la date à laquelle il le dit, ceux qui s'adressent à lui, ceux qui ne s'adressent pas à lui : indépendamment d'autres sources moins publiques, sa biographie officielle est assez bien renseignée (mais voir aussi le § VI.4).C'est la lecture des articles de mathématiques de Pierre Fatou ainsi quela façon dont il a joué son rÛle dans l'histoire du Grand Prix des sciences mathématiques en 1917–1918 qui m'ont donné envie d'en savoir plus sur cemathématicien. Comme nous l'avons déjà remarqué, il a été un protagoniste discret mais assuré, assuré mais cordial, de l'histoire de l'itération.
