Abstract

The number one challenge in India is the huge infrastructure problem. This is not only a fact one can read from statistics or in newspapers and diverse internet blogs, it is also obvious to everyone who lives or travels to India. For instance, if a visitor arrives in one of the metro cities, by the time he leaves the airport, this becomes apparent: depending on the time of the day, one can expect to spend up to three hours reaching the city center, and most of the time, the driver will be quite busy avoiding all the pot-holes in the street, the cows, other animals occasionally crossing, or trucks that have broken down on their journey left right on the road. Shortly after, at the check-in at the (five star) hotel, one has to be aware that it can get pitch dark at any time, as power cuts in many Indian cities are still a daily phenomenon, and the hotel-owned diesel generator may fail at that moment as well. The network connection for the laptop may or may not work, depending on the hotel management and the number of back-up arrangements they have. Even using the one’s own cell phone, it is not that simple to get connected to the outside world. In Mumbai for example, one must be very lucky to have a 30 min. uninterrupted phone call, and in Bangalore the interruptions are even more frequent.
