Abstract

Summary Monte Carlo radiative transfer is a method that can be used for the treatment of physical systems with arbitrary geometries. We review the basics of the method, and present a recent idea that allows the use of this method in radiative equilibrium without iteration. We also discuss special techniques that can be used to improve its performance, and extend the method to treat density fields that result from hydrodynamic simulations. We finally present applications of Monte Carlo radiative transfer in the study of prestellar cores, i.e. condensations in molecular clouds that are expected to collapse and form stars.
