Abstract

Auszug Ebenso wie die Menschen, die er bisher kennengelernt hatte, kämpften auch die Zahlen mit einer Verbissenheit gegeneinander, die keinerlei Kapitulation zulie Später stellte er fest, wie vielfältig ihr Verhalten war. Sie liebten sich in Klammern, kopulierten beim Multiplizieren, vernichteten sich bei den Subtraktionen, bauten mit pythagoreischen Körpern Paläste, tanzten die weite euklidische Geometrie auf und ab, erfanden Utopien in der Differentialrechnung und verurteilten sich im Abgrund der Quadratwurzeln zum Tode. Noch schlimmer war ihre Hölle, sie steckte nicht etwa unter Null, in den negativen Zahlen — eine abscheuliche kindliche Vereinfachung —, sondern in den Paradoxa, den Unregelmäßigkeiten, dem unheimlichen Gespenst der Wahrscheinlichkeiten.
