Abstract

Auszug Der holländische Grafiker Mauritz Cornelis Escher ist bei Mathematikern hoch angesehen, denn mindestens drei Aspekte seines Werkes haben etwas mit Mathematik zu tun. Da sind zum einen die flächenfüllenden Muster: Escher war äußerst kreativ im Erfinden von Fischen, Reptilien, Pflanzen usw., die man lückenlos aneinanderreihen konnte. Dann hat er auf verschiedene Weisen versucht, die Unendlichkeit darzustellen, und drittens sollte man an seine „unmöglichen“ Bilder denken, bei denen — zum Beispiel — Wasserfälle nach oben zu fließen scheinen. Auch zur Beschreibung dieses Zusammenspiels von „local“ (im Kleinen sehen die Bilder ja ganz vernünftig aus) und „global“ (als Ganzes gesehen, kann da aber etwas nicht stimmen) hat mit Mathematik geeignete Theorien bereit gestellt, doch das wird im Folgenden keine Rolle spielen.
