Auszug Es gibt viele wirtschaftstheoretische Probleme, die zwar mathematische Schwierigkeiten aufweisen, aber keine grundsätzlichen: etwa die kürzeste Route zu finden, um alle Hauptstädte Europas anzufliegen, oder das günstigste Versicherungsbündel zu wähl Leicht lässt sich hier festlegen, was unter einer bestmöglichen Lösung zu verstehen ist. Anders ist es, wenn das Resultat von den Entscheidungen mehrerer Beteiligter abhängt: was soll hier unter ‚bestmöglich‘ verstanden werden? Nehmen wir etwa an, dass zwei Kaufhausriesen an einem Standort interessiert sind. Wenn beide dort eine Filiale eröffnen, bauen beide Verlust. Am besten ist es, wenn sich einer zurückzieht; besser gesagt, wenn sich der andere zurückzieht — aber wer soll das sein? Was könnte man unter der Lösung so eines Problems verstehen?
