Abstract

Zusammenfassung Am 27. Januar 1922 erschien zur Feier des sechzigsten Geburtstages von David Hilbert eine Sonderausgabe der Zeitschrift Die Naturwissenschaften.1 Sie enthielt eine Reihe von Essays, in denen die engsten Mitarbeiter und ehemaligen Schüler Hilberts Beiträge zu verschiedenen Gebieten präsentierten. So stellte Otto Toeplitz den Algebraiker Hilbert vor; Max Dehn erläuterte sein geometrisches Werk; Richard Courant behandelte Hilbert als Analytiker und Max Born beschrieb seine physikalischen Arbeiten; am Ende schloss Paul Bernays den Bogen mit Reflexionen über Hilberts Bedeutung für die Philosophie der Mathematik. Diese einzelnen Aspekte wurden durch eine biographische Skizze eingeleitet, in der Otto Blumenthal die kreativen Phasen in Hilberts Karriere als einen beispiellosen mathematischen Siegeszug darstellte. Seine Bewunderung für Hilberts Leistungen wie auch seine Sympathie für seine Person konnten nicht klarer als in diesem lebendigen Portrait seines Lehrers in Erscheinung treten.2
