Abstract

Zusammenfassung Von den 94 ordentlichen Professuren der Mathematik, die es am Ende der Weimarer Republik an Universitäten und Hochschulen gab, waren zu Beginn des Jahres 1933 insgesamt 20 durch jüdische Mathematiker besetzt. Im Zeitraum zwischen 1914 und 1933 waren sogar 28 dieser Professuren mindestens zeitweise durch einen jüdischen Mathematiker besetzt. Auch wenn sich die Zahl der Extraordinariate nur schwer genau bestimmen lässt und sie zudem ständig schwankte, kann davon ausgegangen werden, dass der Anteil jüdischer Mathematiker unter ihnen in einer ähnlichen Größenordnung liegt. Fügt man diesen Professoren noch jene Forscher hinzu, denen aus antisemitischen oder anderen Gründen die Habilitation nicht möglich war — dazu zählten so bedeutende Gelehrte wie Emmy Noether — und vergegenwärtigt man sich, dass auch in Zürich, Wien, Prag und anderen Städten, in denen an Universitäten Deutsch gesprochen wurde, viele jüdische Mathematiker tätig waren, so wird deutlich, dass das deutschsprachige mathematische Leben vor 1933 in erheblichem Maß ein deutsch-jüdisches mathematisches Leben war.
