Abstract

Zusammenfassung Nach Justus Liebig lässt der pro-Kopf-Verbrauch an Seife einen Rückschluss auf den Kulturstand eines Volkes zu. Dem mag der umweltbewusste Zeitgenosse sicher nicht mehr so ganz beipflichten, aber die Seife bleibt auch heute noch das Kernstück der Hygiene. Erfunden wurde sie vermutlich von den Germanen, die sie aus Buchenasche und Fett herstellten. Die Römer haben ihre hervorragenden Eigenschaften sofort erkannt und das Rezept übernommen mit dem Erfolg, dass sie im Mittelalter im ganzen Mittelmeerraum verbreitet war. So lange mindestens, kann man annehmen, machen die Kinder Seifenblasen. Und so lange sind die Menschen fasziniert von diesen luftigen Gebilden mit ihrem sanften Schweben, mit ihrem bezaubernden Farbenspiel und mit ihrer Vergänglichkeit, die zum Inbegriff „geplatzter Träume“ geworden ist.
