Abstract

Zusammenfassung Selbstverständlich ist es verlockend, zum Einstieg in die Knotentheorie an Alexander den Großen zu erinnern, hatte er sich doch nachweislich mit einem Knotenproblem auseinderzusetzen. Aber sein Problem, ein verknotetes Seil mit offenen Enden aufzudröseln, ist eher eine Gedulds- als eine mathematische Frage. Hinzu kommt, und das ist viel gravierender, dass wir sein Lösungsverfahren nicht gerade als vorbildlich empfinden. Den Knoten einfach mit dem Schwert zu zertrennen, mag zwar zeitsparend sein, ist aber doch wenig feinfühlend und auf keinen Fall eine gute Grundlage für eine mathematische Theorie der Knoten.
