Abstract

Zusammenfassung Aus den Zeitungen der vergangenen Jahre dürfte der durchschnittliche Leser wohl das Folgende über die Mathematik erfahren haben: Ein ehrwürdiges Problem der Mathematik wurde gelöst — dann irgendwie doch nicht —dann irgendwie wieder doch. Der Beweis passt nicht an den Rand einer beschriebenen Seite. Jemand anders hat eine riesengrosse Primzahl entdeckt. Wieder jemand anders hat die soundsovielte Dezimalstelle hinterm Komma der Zahl Pi herausgefunden. Mit Computern. Mathematiker bekommen keinen Nobelpreis, sind aber so ziemlich die einzigen, die wirklich verstehen, was der letztjährige Nobelpreisträger für Wirtschaftswissenschaften ersonnen hat. Chaostheorie ist der Schlüssel zu den Geheimnissen des Universums, des Managements, des Nahverkehrs und der Liebe. Deutsche Schüler können nicht rechnen. Staubsauger sind besser, wenn sie mit fusseliger Logik arbeiten.
